We have exciting opportunities for scientific computing specialists to impact Drug Discovery projects, working as part of a global Scientific HPC team within the Science & Enabling unit’s IT department.

High performance computing (HPC) platforms provide the backbone for computational research activities in AstraZeneca; we use a variety of UNIX-based platforms, including multi-processor personal workstations, large-memory servers and large-scale Linux clusters. This infrastructure supports computational research activities at all stages of drug discovery/early development, including target identification, lead identification and optimization, compound safety analysis, biomarker discovery and patient/disease segmentation: it requires an expert team to ensure that a broad range of technologies can support the diverse analysis of datasets that are typically increasing exponentially in complexity and size.

The Scientific HPC team is responsible for an established high-performance computing environment based at our R&D centres in Sweden, United Kingdom, North America and India.

We are seeking scientific computing specialists to join our team, whose role will be to ensure that existing technology is exploited to its full potential, and to lead the adoption of new technologies. The successful candidates’ primary role is to maintain and develop these HPC facilities as a member of the global Scientific HPC team. This involves working closely with scientists to solve computational problems and to ensure new computational techniques for Drug Discovery and Development can optimally exploit this environment.

A further role is to support, maintain and in some cases collaborate in the development of software solutions for data analysis, visualization and sharing (dissemination) of results that are based on the LAMP stack (Linux + Apache + MySQL + (PHP | Perl | Python)). These provide novel approaches for scientists to generate models of data often on large compute resources, to archive such models and to communicate these to drug projects.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Help maintain HPC facilities

  • Linux compute farms

  • Desktop and larger-scale visualization

  • Highly-available storage and backup systems

  • Specialized file systems for HPC/large volumes of data

  • Operating Systems

  • Desktop workstation management

  • Work collaboratively with R&D scientists to solve computational challenges

  • Communicate effectively with users, e.g. via web-based services (wikis) or social media applications (yammer)

  • Support a wide range of commercial and in-house scientific applications

  • Administrate MySQL databases, ensuring high availability and implementing robust schemas

  • Develop and maintain infrastructure to support web service APIs and virtualization

  • Drive innovative computational solutions and exploit emerging technologies

  • Proactively engage in knowledge sharing to build expertise across the regions

  • Build knowledge and expertise of the Pharma industry and HPC trends

Minimum Requirements – Education and Experience

  • 7-9 years of technical experience working with research-based scientific computing environment

  • Bachelor’s degree(s) in Computational, Physical or Biological Science

  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to work with others to achieve objectives

  • Experience of large-scale server computing

  • Programming/scripting skills and experience (e.g Python, Perl, Java, UNIX shell)

  • Database skills (e.g. MySQL, Oracle)

Desired Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in a related field

  • Proven skills in software development within a scientific computing environment

  • Experience in supporting major software packages and toolkits for computational chemistry/structural biology/computational biology/statistics (for example, OpenEye, Schrödinger, MATLAB, R, CCP4, Gaussian)

  • Experience of working within an R&D drug project
