Team Leader – Early Product Development, Pharmaceutical Sciences

Pharmaceutical Sciences is an important department within our Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) Biotech unit. The vision for Pharmaceutical Sciences is to deliver the therapies of the future through scientific leadership in drug delivery, design of synthetic routes and supply of materials for early safety and clinical studies. Our portfolio of projects spans a wide range including small molecules, new modalities and nanomedicines across AstraZeneca’s therapy areas.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Pharmaceutical Sciences group in the Boston area. Reporting into the Head of Early Product Development, as a Team Leader you will be accountable the pharmaceutical aspects of a portfolio of early discovery oncology compounds from Lead Generation to Candidate Selection.

Through a focus on the patient experience, an intimate understanding of the disease state and the commercial setting, you and your team will influence the design of candidate drugs that have an enhanced potential to become successful products. You will draw on your extensive understanding of product development, manufacturing, chemistry, drug delivery and emerging technologies to bring forward innovative new opportunities.

You will be responsible for the personal development of your team members and will coach them in their project and scientific activities. You will collaborate on projects with colleagues within Pharmaceutical Sciences and other AstraZeneca functions to drive the implementation of strategic and scientific work. You will have the accountability to ensure that the team develops and delivers scientifically innovative, valid, risk assessed, prioritised programmes to deliver the project needs. The projects will span a range of complexity, routes of administration and type of active agent, and may include collaborations with external companies or organisations, or scientific research programmes.

You will support your team members to develop strong relationships with colleagues across the IMED, to ensure Pharmaceutical Sciences has a seamless, integrated role in the IMED projects. You will also contribute timely and relevant scientific input, and be a champion for the group.

As the role holder your impact will primarily be on people development, project delivery and scientific leadership. Your impact on the wider business is through the development of local, regional and global solutions which improve customer interfaces and product development across a portfolio of projects. You will have impact externally, proactively continuing to drive your own personal scientific leadership through e.g. publications, presentations, collaborations, seeking new technologies etc. As a senior member of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the AZ Waltham site you will also make a strategic contribution to site activities.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

  • Leading, coaching, developing and managing a multi skilled team of approximately eight scientists

  • Influencing and contributing to compound design, assessing the developability of new drug candidates and enabling pre-clinical studies.

  • Developing and delivering scientifically valid, risk assessed, prioritised programmes to deliver the project needs.

  • Managing and delivering a complex portfolio of early projects through the team and with collaboration across the global EPD group.

  • Identification and implementation of new science and technologies within the team and the wider EPD group

  • Working as a member of the global Early Product Development leadership team to drive the strategy and performance of the department.

  • Establishing and maintaining excellent networks & collaborations with key IMED stakeholders.

  • Ensuring SHE, GLP and GMP compliance, and that all work is carried out to AstraZeneca and external regulatory policies and standards

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

  • Either undergraduate/ Masters level qualification with several years’ experience within the pharmaceutical sector, or a PhD level qualification (preferred).

  • Capable of leading, coaching, developing and managing a team of scientists

  • Good understanding of the overall drug development process and an appreciation of how all Pharmaceutical Sciences disciplines contribute to R&D and the broader business.

  • Experience and knowledge of, or exposure to, multiple disciplines in Pharmaceutical Development (CMC) and related functions (e.g. Discovery, Operations and Clinical).

  • Thorough understanding of principles, applications and management of SHE, GLP and GMP.

  • Track record as a scientific leader, providing scientific challenge and direction to team members

  • Line of sight & preferably knowledge of the overall drug development process from Discovery through to Launch

  • Broad multidisciplinary CMC experience, particularly in influencing compound and product design

  • Understanding of the oncology disease area to enable influencing of drug and drug product design from a patient/carer/health professional perspective

  • A leader of a product development scientific skill discipline, capable of continuing to develop self in this arena and developing external visibility and influence e.g. publications, presentations, collaborations, and scouting for new technologies.
