The Senior Packaging Development Engineer is responsible for providing engineering and technical support to the Mt. Vernon site for the development, testing, and maintenance of package components, packaging operations, and associated documentation. The Senior Packaging Engineer provides package development leadership within the Packing Process Execution Team (PET).
Determine and document the component equipment interfaces and capabilities, ensuring the package designs and systems will operate efficiently on existing and new packaging lines.
Manage and execute design, evaluation, testing and qualification of new and modified package components.
Support package development activities for new product launches, line extensions, tech transfers and line moves including coordination of stability packaging runs, line trials, and simulated ship studies.
Serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for improvement projects such as packaging line efficiencies, component improvements, cost savings initiatives, qualification of new component vendors, and improve quality of final product.
Provides technical support to incoming materials quality control lab and SME support on investigations related to package components and correction of process-related problems and deviations from standards.
Creates and approves technical drawings for primary, secondary and tertiary package components.
Authors, reviews and/or approves regulatory and technical documentation, including but not limited to Bills of Materials (BOMs), package component specifications, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and technical reports.
Supports cross-functional teams and collaborates with Project Management, Procurement, Formulation, Packing Operations, Engineering, Automation, Incoming Materials Quality Control (IMQC), Distribution, Planning, Regulatory (CMC and Labelling), Supply Chain, Global Packaging Technology, Global Product Security Team and various Quality Assurance units to optimize end-to-end cycle time, packaging productivity, product quality, and supply reliability.
Writes and executes Packaging Performance Qualifications (PQs) with overall area and system impact understanding.
Provides technical perspective during audits (internal and external) and regulatory inspections.
Trains and mentors new Packaging Engineers and interns.
Bachelor of Science degree required, preferably in packaging science or related engineering discipline.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience (or Master’s Degree plus 3 years) in pharmaceutical or consumer healthcare manufacturing, package design and/or packaging process development.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making capability.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and present technical information.
Must have drawing experience preferably with AutoCAD and/or Adobe Illustrator
Experience using TOPS or similar palletizing program
Experience using SAP or similar operations management software.
Knowledge of current industry standards and test methods (ASTM/USP)
Six Sigma and/or Lean training preferred.
