The Global Packaging Expert role sits in the Global Packaging and Product Security group which is part of the Supply Chain Centre of Excellence (COE) with Global Supply Chain and Strategy. The purpose of the COE is to provide leadership to innovate, establish & sustain global supply chain processes & capabilities that enable delivery of Operations 2020 strategy and AstraZeneca’s bold ambition.

The Global Packaging Expert is a tactical role for ensuring the right technical packaging standards and specifications are in place and implemented across AstraZeneca’s global network thereby ensuring that AstraZeneca has a standardised, lean network that can respond quickly to New Product Introductions, supply chain challenges and patient requirements. When new challenges arise, this role is key in not only developing new packaging solutions but also ensuring commitment across the supply chain; both internally and externally. With AstraZeneca’s strong new product pipeline AstraZeneca’s future success is intrinsically linked with successful packaging development and associated processes.

Key Accountabilities:

You will be the technical expert for Global Packaging specifications across the AstraZeneca network and will have experience of packaging across the breadth of manufacturing and engineering processes. You will create, manage and maintain Global Packaging and Product Security documents, specifications and standards. Ensuring that all Global Packaging Standards and Specifications comply with existing and future packaging legislation.

You will be responsible for ensuring introduction of new products comply with Global Packaging Standards and Specifications. Where a standard doesn’t meet commercial or patient requirements you will develop a high-level packaging design. This will involve managing new packaging design for components through from the identification of business need to the timely introduction and acceptance of the changes by the customers. You will be responsible for translating business proposals into costed options for package design ensuring that you balance the various influencing factors such as commercial and quality requirements, supplier capabilities, manufacturability, storage / distribution needs and regulatory compliance.

You will also identify and lead improvement initiatives and project teams to support longer term packaging strategy and sustainability as well as identifying and delivering continuous improvement initiatives. This will include working with Global Supply Teams to identify opportunities throughout the product life-cycle.

You will be a process expert in the processes involved with introducing new packaging specifications and standards.

As the process expert for Global Packaging processes you will influence decisions at the sites globally in respect to investments and asset utilisation.

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience of Packaging Design and Development in a regulated industry, ideally Pharmaceutical Operations or R&D

  • An understanding of the overall drug development process and commercialisation process through the lifecycle

  • Knowledge of procurement, supply and manufacturing

  • Good understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice, Safety, Health and Environment and Standard Operating Procedures

  • Project management and change management expertise

  • Good communications skills

Desirable requirements

  • Diploma in Packaging Technology
