AstraZeneca is recruiting a Head of Translational Science within the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden

CVRM Innovative Medicines (IMED) within AstraZeneca is accountable for the discovery and the development (up to phase II) of new drugs in the CVRM arena within three main strategic areas - cardiovascular/heart failure, metabolism (diabetes and NASH) and chronic kidney diseases. The continuous scientific exchange between Early and Late Portfolio is one of the main requisites for building and sustaining our research pipeline, and Late Stage projects represents an invaluable opportunity to better understand how to identify and target the patients with the highest medical need. Translational Sciences (TS) Department in IMED CVRM has the remit to bridge early and late drug development by providing early target validation in human and by driving precision medicine approaches through biomarker science. In this role you will lead Translational Science function within CVRM.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accountable for Translational science plans in CVRM

  • Accountable for the identification of biomarkers and potential segmentation tools to support CVRM project teams

  • Deliver a collaborative working model with project teams to provide human target validation and biomarker technology platforms

  • Ensure that biomarker science and human target validation input is provided to drug project and capability teams as required

  • Implement the development, validation and delivery, from animal to man, clinically qualified biomarkers that will guide dose selection, safety evaluation, go/no go decision-marking, patient stratification

  • As appropriate access external biomarker technology collaborations to access emerging technologies and continually evaluate potential technology developments, with a long-term view of Biomarker science

  • Work closely with CVRM IMED Bioscience and DMPK and continue to support the function with appropriate analysis.

  • To drive in close collaboration with Early Clinical Development translational medicine aspects in projects

  • Ensure compliance to PHB function ethics, policies and standard procedures.

  • Ensure performance management and personal development of all direct reports

  • Provide leadership to drive a performance driven culture

  • Develop, coach, mentor, motivate and inspire individuals in the function

  • Ensure budget responsibilities

  • Collaborate strongly with other groups/functions that provide expertise and deliverables relevant to Translational science scope

  • Monitor the external environment to capture new scientific trends in translational science, novel assay methodologies, evaluation of such technologies and their adaptation in house, and to identify external opportunities in a timely manner

  • Ensure access to the best external science (e.g., universities, biotech companies, government programs)

  • Monitor and incorporate regulatory requirements for biomarker development.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD / post-doc in life sciences or equivalent or MD with research background

  • Proven leadership ability and line management experience

  • Approx 10 years of work experience in pharmaceutical R&D, preferably discovery and development

  • Demonstrated knowledge across R&D-related sciences and practices

  • Experience and solid understanding of biology, pharmacology, translational medicine and clinical sciences, with pre-eminence in at least one of these areas

  • Track record of delivering in discovery as well as development setting

  • Understanding of payer, regulatory and commercial issues in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Experience in the therapy area
