AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP Senior Scientist/Associate Principal Scientist, Biophysics. in Cambridge, United Kingdom
Position: Senior Scientist/Associate Principal Scientist, Biophysics.
Location: Cambridge, UK.
Salary: Competitive & Excellent Benefits Package.
AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of prescription medicines for some of the world’s most serious diseases. However, we're more than one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies. At AstraZeneca, we're proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. Staff are empowered to express diverse perspectives, are made to feel valued, energized and rewarded for their ideas and creativity.
Discovery Sciences, within AstraZeneca - Innovative Medicines & Early Development (IMED) supports drug discovery projects across the global IMED portfolio, ranging from chemical molecules to new therapeutic modalities such as peptides and nucleic acids. Discovery Sciences is located at R&D sites in the UK, US and Sweden and is organised into distinct scientific and technical competencies.
This is an opportunity for a talented scientist with expertise in single-molecule biophysics methods &/or mass spectrometry of protein ligand interactions, to play an influential role in drug discovery projects within Innovative Medicines at AstraZeneca in Cambridge UK. This position is within the Biophysics group (part of the Structure, Biophysics and FBLG department) which has expertise in characterising protein-ligand interactions using biomolecular NMR, surface plasmon resonance, calorimetry, thermal shift, HDX-MS and a range of other techniques. You will collaborate with other biophysicists, crystallographers, protein scientists, bioscientists, and chemists in cancer drug discovery. You will create innovative approaches to address cancer drug targets. Working collaboratively in project teams you will find and develop high-quality lead compounds leading to clinical candidate drugs.
Your expertise will complement and strengthen the biophysics capability. You will learn new biophysical methods as needed. You will develop and use novel biophysical assays to characterise protein ligand interactions. You will apply biophysics in fragment based lead generation projects and in characterising hits from high-throughput screens, DNA encoded library screens and compounds identified by academic collaborators. You will use biophysical approaches to develop understanding of target biology and the mechanism of action of compounds from the early hit identification phase through to candidate drug selection and beyond.
You will publish your high impact science in internationally recognised journals. You will contribute to the development of the structure and biophysics discipline by identifying and driving improvements and innovations that advance drug discovery projects. We are committed to the development of biophysical & structural approaches that provide high fidelity, deep understanding and predictive power to help create new innovative medicines.
Who You Are
A Ph.D in Biophysics, Biochemistry or a related discipline. You will bring expertise in single-molecule biophysical methods &/or biological mass spectrometry of protein ligand interactions, backed up by publications. Experience in other biophysical techniques such as SPR, ITC, TSA, NMR is valuable but not required. You will have a solid understanding of the range of biophysical approaches, structural biology, protein science and enzymology. Experience of working in a drug discovery environment where structural and biophysical data are used to drive medicinal chemistry is valued, but not required.
Strong communication skills and experience of multidisciplinary team working are highly valued. The role requires personal drive, result focus and a passion to understand the needs of the project and disease area and to achieve outstanding results.
As a biophysical scientist you will:
Contribute to the shaping of project strategy and planning
Develop biophysical assays that fit the target and project plan, ensuring that protein constructs and samples are fit-for-purpose
Conduct fragment screens and support fragment SAR testing with binding affinity data
Confirm specific binding of hits from HTS, DNA encoded libraries, phenotypic screens, collaborations.
Provide mechanistic characterisation of key hits and leads to understand mechanism of action, kinetics and thermodynamics.
Publish scientific papers in internationally recognised journals
Identify improvements and innovations in biophysics techniques
Supervise students and postdocs
Provide project leadership of hit identification activities
Work as a team player to ensure delivery of quality leads for projects
