The Quantitative Biology department, within Discovery Sciences is a data science department specialised in bioinformatics, image processing, statistics and machine learning.
As the Imaging IT Lead within in Cambridge, UK, you’ll play an imaging IT business owner role to ensure all relevant IT systems (IT components in imaging equipment, software and IT infrastructure) are functioning properly for daily business, in particularly the high content imaging screening activates from small scale bespoke experiments to large scale high throughput screening campaigns. You will be working with biologists and the IT department at AstraZeneca and external vendors, to act as a bridge between all sides, translating technical/biological requirements, advising, trouble shooting and facilitating IT support and maintenance. You are also expected to understand data and data life cycle management (acquisition, storage, retrieval, archiving, deletion) for both imaging data and metadata – this will enable other colleagues to perform the downstream data analysis using artificial intelligence methods.
Internal career level: Senior Scientist (career level D) or Associate Principle Scientist (career level E).
Main Duties and Responsibilities
You will be involved in the “business as usual” aspect of managing and supporting cellular imaging workflow to ensure the smooth running of key imaging platforms and IT infrastructures. You will manage image data, metadata and analytical results, to manage data computation demands (clusters, clouds), and to understand data storage solutions (e.g. databases) and future trends.
Given the interdisciplinary nature of this role, you are also expected to have some understanding or at the least the interests to learn cellular biology, microscopy and cellular screening workflow.
Be the system owner of key microscopic imaging hardware and software, including PerkinElmer’s Columbus, Yokogawa’s CV7000/CV8000, ThermoFisher’s Cellomics/CellInsight, MolecularDevices’ ImageXpress and image data storage solutions.
Collaborate with biologists to resolve problems in a timely fashion with imaging hardware, software, computation platforms and storage solutions.
Interface with internal IT department and vendors, facilitating support and maintenance in a timely fashion for imaging hardware, software, computation platforms and storage solutions.
Engage with biologists and IT professionals to gather feedback and input. Use this information to continuously improve services and imaging infrastructure (imaging hardware, software, computation platforms and storage solutions).
Act as focal point for data management and data governance, providing data ownership to imaging data and relevant metadata, defining and ensuring processes and policies are followed.
Across stakeholder groups, drive the strategic direction in cell imaging, IT & data management.
B.Sc., Masters or PhD in a relevant field (computer science, electronics, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics or equivalent) with proven relevant experience.
Interacting and engaging effectively across disciplines, cultures and geographies.
Excellent trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills for IT issues.
System admin in Windows and/or LINUX experience.
Knowledge of network infrastructure, distributed computing, clusters and/or cloud solution.
Working with relational databases, awareness of data management and governance processes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Interest in or basic understanding of cell biology and image processing.
Hands-on experience with microscopic system such as PerkinElmer’s Columbus/Acapella, Yokogawa’s CV7000/CV8000, ThermoFisher’s Cellomics/CellInsight, MolecularDevices’ ImageXpress.
Working with biologists and microscopists in a biological and cellular screening environment.
IT support within large enterprises.
DB admin in Oracle or similar.
Working with NoSQL databases, knowledge and experiences in metadata management and semantic approaches to data management (ontologies).
Object storage solutions, such as OpenStack and AWS S3.
Big data infrastructure, such as Hadoop, Microsoft Azure and IBM Bluemix.
Basic knowledge of system architecture, its various components and life-cycle processes.
Programming skills in Python, Java, C/C++, Matlab or others.
