We are looking to appoint a Commercial IT leader accountable for IT in Europe, based in Zug, Switzerland. Europe Commercial consists of all markets in Europe and also Israel.

Role background

At AstraZeneca, our IT organisation is focussed on pushing the boundaries of technology to achieve positive patient and business outcomes. In Commercial IT, we are focussed on smoothing the patient journey through tech innovation and supporting the growth of the business through impactful launches, field effectiveness and digital/multi channel capabilities – all founded on deep partnerships with our business colleagues. The role also covers Medical in-market and to an extent, the Enabling functions. The scope of capabilities focus includes Digital and Data, business performance reporting, CRM and Learning capabilities. Our capabilities are predominantly created and delivered by our global IT organisations and are cloud based and mobile enabled – this includes Infrastructure.

This role works with the Europe Region Executive Vice President (a CEO direct report) and her regional leadership team to shape the organisation’s future through the implementation of innovative new technologies to support the growth of the European Commercial business. Accelerating digital leadership and innovation to benefit the Patient journey and HCPs is a key focus. The role will drive the IT vision and strategy and business transformation for the Region and ensure team and individual performance to deliver the business strategy and objectives. The role partners with the leadership team to identify portfolio priorities and areas for innovation. The role has a number of direct reports across Europe markets where a key focus is on giving developmental opportunities to grow people and providing coaching.


  • Establish and maintain strategic partnership with Europe Region leadership team

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of business areas’ strategies and needs for the future and ensure alignment with the IT Strategy. Support business change, acting as a single point of contact for senior stakeholders, facilitatingsynergies and alignment across the area.

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of an Digital and IT strategy for the region business in line with the Group IT strategy. Contributes to the development of the overall Region/Group IT strategy

  • Proactively identify opportunities for IT to deliver innovative solutions to Patient, HCP and AZ employee challenges and situations where leading edge technological innovations can be deployed to business advantage.

  • Represent IT at region-level and gain commitment to IT initiatives by applying specialist knowledge of services provided by IT and by marketing established, new and changed IT services to the customer groups

  • Assess, prioritise and effectively communicate customer needs, and initiate projects in partnership with the International Region IT team.

  • Encourage proactive collaboration and communication between markets in Europe and also with Asia and Emerging Markets - to ensure identification of best practice and synergies.

  • Proactively engage with Global IT functions to ensure that global plans are developed with an appropriate understanding of the area/MC commercial strategy, business requirements and constraints

  • Oversee the delivery of the capability projects into the markets with quality, in partnership with business change leaders.

  • Drive transparency on exploitation of capabilities, increasing the value achieved from these investments.

  • Work with the business area to develop measurable strategy and portfolio performance metrics and ensure development of customer scorecards. Define and monitor the delivery of value through IT projects and initiatives

  • Be jointly accountable for the development and implementation of the appropriate regulatory control and security strategies to minimise risk and role modelling commitment and adherence to them in line with global policies and procedures

  • Work with the Customer Service function to ensure that IT delivery to the business is operating effectively, manage overall satisfaction with IT services and proactively identify risks, issues as well as improvement areas. Conduct analysis of demand for services improvement

  • Create a positive team climate of continuous improvement and recruit, lead, develop and motivate staff to achieve objectives and deliver competitive advantage through clear linkages between investment in people and business performance.

  • Ensure IT budgets for Markets are effectively managed, monitored, forecasted and controlled.

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience


  • Experience of leading teams with a demonstrable track record of motivational and achievement oriented leadership

  • Strong experience of developing relationships with senior internal customers and suppliers

  • Strong track record in shaping and driving a Digital innovation agenda.

  • Ability to work well in and across diverse global Teams

  • Strong networking and consulting skills

  • Strong communication and influencing skills

  • Advanced proficiency in strategic planning, change enablement and innovation

  • Strong experience planning, deploying and maintaining Commercial IT capabilities especially Business Information, Digital channels and Field Capabilities

  • Identifying and delivering POCs of innovative technology solutions

  • Experience of leadership in a complex/geographical context

  • Proven skills of managing budgets

  • Planning and delivery of Digital Marketing capabilities

  • Experience of Pharmaceutical or Consumer products Sales representative effectiveness best practice
